Locker Hooking

The day started well: the sun shone as we arrived at Goodleigh and the combined with Linda's warm welcome we all settled down to a rewarding and pleasant day.

Just before Eileens's arrival there was a phone call from a MAN asking for directions to the venue! Such excitement was later to be dashed as it was only Eileen's driver. We thought it wonderful that there would be a man interested enough to join us (next course perhaps?).

Locker Hooking is a craft Linda learned in the USA using a special Locker Hooking Tool. Locker Hooking is a craft that enables you to make useful and attractive items from mats to heat pads. Coming up to Christmas my thoughts are on quick easy to make pressies such as purses and table place mats.

You have to have a Locker Hooking Tool and Canvas; Twine fabric and/or Wool of your choice. The Locker Hooking Tool is like a cross between a large crochet hook and a large needle. The crochet end is used to pull the loops of your material or wool through the mesh in the canvas and then the needle eye is threaded with cord or wool and pulled through the loops locking them in.

The edges of the canvas are turned and over stitched with a strip of fabric about an inch wide or spun wool, using the needle eye of the tool, to create a finished edge. The first row of locker hooking is the trickiest as its double the thickness. The first square in the corner has 4 layers of canvas but the next rows are easier.

Linda showed us a number of items she had made some time ago, including a mat that was still very attractive after some washing and wear. Its an easy skill to learn and as relaxing as sitting with your knitting whilst watching telly.

Viv Harris and Cathy brought wool from their Llamas: "Timmy" "Castor" & "Pollux", and kindly let us all try some out. I found unspun sheeps wool to be particularly effective and am already into a rug project using a small bag of my own sheeps wool. Strips of coloured material are particularly effective to create patterns and you can even mark your canvas to a design of your choice to follow.

Linda was an interesting and informative teacher, full of fun and enthusiasm. In all we all found it to be a particularly successful day and would recommend it to you. Viv & I found it well worth the drive from South to North Devon.
